Fire department to carry vaccine to people in need

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS– The Excelsior Springs Fire Department is bringing COVID vaccinations to those who cannot get out for their shots. On June 7, the City Council approved a memorandum of understanding, or MOU, with the Clay County Public Health Center for the fire department to administer vaccinations to shut-ins. Clay County will equip the department with vaccine doses and other medical supplies, Fire Chief Joe Maddick stated in a May 27 memo. The department’s duties will include transporting and storing doses, sending back unused doses and logistical matters such as inventorying, Maddick stated. Maddick also stated Clay County and the department will maintain the MOU “as long as there is a need for the COVID-19 vaccine.” The department has some experience with COVID vaccinations, having twice assisted Clay County, Maddick told city leaders. “They sent a nurse to the house,” Maddick said. “We went to stand by, just in case the patient had an allergic reaction.
