Fire strikes, home total loss

Two Excelsior Springs firemen were injured when responding to the call of a structure fire in unincorporated Clay County shortly after 3 p.m. Monday. The Excelsior Springs Fire Department was dispatched to the 25000 block of Northeast 136 Street, just outside the Excelsior Springs city limits. The house had been occupied by a man, woman and a dog, all of whom escaped safely. Based on preliminary assessments, it appears the fire was caused by residents burning trash outside the home. High winds caused the embers to spread and start fire to the garage, shrubs, and nearby trees. The entire house became fully involved resulting in an apparent total loss. “Two ES firefighters were injured on the scene,” Excelsior Springs Fire Department Chief Joe Maddick reported. “One refused treatment and the other was taken to a local area hospital where they were evaluated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
