Former Tiger takes over high school girls basketball

An Excelsior Springs High School graduate is returning to lead the girls basketball program with a goal that extends beyond wins and losses — helping student- athletes build the character, resilience and work ethic needed long after their playing days are over.

The Board of Education recently approved five new head coaches for the 2026-27 school year, including Levi King, who is taking over the girls basketball program after spending the past four seasons on the coaching staff.

King’s love for basketball began early. Born and raised in North Kansas City alongside his two older brothers, he said many of his earliest memories centered around sports, whether he was playing himself or gathering with family to watch games.

He started playing basketball in the second grade and “quickly became obsessed.” After moving to Excelsior Springs in 2014, he continued playing throughout high school before graduating from Excelsior Springs High School in 2020.
