Excelsior Springs was founded upon the natural wonder of mineral water containing iron-manganese, calcium bicarbonate (lithia), sodium bicarbonate (soda), saline and sulphur underneath the city’s surface. Each water was sourced and used for its mineral content and the therapeutic value it offered people since 1914. When the word got out about these healing waters, Excelsior Springs became a booming mineral water industry and national health resort location until the late 1950s. Once the mineral water industry was suspected of the effectiveness of the water’s healing properties, legislation passed in the 1960s prohibiting clinics from publicizing the therapeutic water treatments Excelsior Springs offered clients. Now 60 years later, individuals in the community have come together to discuss ways Excelsior Springs can bring back its most natural resource.
