Human trafficking: Global issue recognized locally

Human trafficking — the third most profitable crime, next to selling drugs and weapons — is considered modern-day slavery. According to lawpublications. net, people are being bought, sold and smuggled for labor trafficking and sex trafficking at an estimated rate of 21 million people worldwide. Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers and Clay County Sergeant Chris Johnson recently explained the dangers of human trafficking and ways to stay safe. Childers noted human trafficking occurs locally, even in small towns. The sheriff explained since the movie “Taken” was released, many people think human trafficking is someone who gets kidnapped and is sold into sex slavery. In the Ray County region, he said there is an influx of people from surrounding areas and other countries opening businesses with the potential for their workers to offer sexual services to clients.
