Job Corps helps students succeed in workforce

Dedicated to helping students build meaningful, lifelong skills and obtain fulfilling jobs, Job Corps in Excelsior Springs strives for student success. A vocational training program for 16- to 24-yearolds, Job Corps began in 1964 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, and focuses on implementing a residential campus, allowing students to live at home while taking classes. “Job Corps, through the years, has gotten a reputation of being a school for troubled people,” said Lori Sams, center director. “We are a program offering disadvantaged youth career training to move out of their circumstances.” Some disadvantages stem from the area of the state the student resides or the high school from which they graduated, she said. In some instances, students may need help accessing job training and the only options for employment are fast food and factory jobs.
