Law restricts drivers from phone use

A new bill passed earlier this month forbids Missouri drivers of any age from holding or using any “electronic communication devices.” Called “Siddens Bening Hands Free Law” Missouri Revised Statute 304.820 described devices as anything from a phone to laptops. Drivers may not take videos or scroll while driving – this includes talking on the phone, manually texting or typing into a search engine. Drivers may not record, post, send or broadcast video, which includes video/facetime calls and creating social media posts. Drivers may not watch movies or videos whatsoever. Law enforcement or emergency vehicle operators may use an electronic device for the “sole purpose of reporting an emergency situation and continuing communication.” The law prohibits school bus drivers from using electronic communication devices while loading or unloading passengers.
