Lawmakers define ‘success’ differently after session

JEFFERSON CITY – Republican and Democratic lawmakers defined success differently after this year’s Missouri General Assembly session. Rep. Peggy McGaugh, a Republican, supported the long-delayed call for out-of-state businesses that sell goods online to pay Missouri sales tax – just like in-state businesses pay. In the last state to collect the tax, some Missouri lawmakers had for years argued the tax could not be collected. The U.S. Supreme Court in the Wayfair case ended the argument. McGaugh stated collecting sales tax “on internet purchases (levels) the playing field with our local brick-and-mortar and mom-and-pop businesses, who have been devastated by the shutdowns.” The House passed the bill on a bipartisan, 145-4 vote. “Important to note,” McGaugh stated, “(is) that the counties that have passed a voter-approved use tax will see increases in their tax revenue; however, those who have not successfully passed a use...
