Local farmers discuss drought conditions

Citing drought conditions, two local farmers say they have been impacted by the recent dry, hot weather conditions in the state. Missouri remains dangerously dry, although drought conditions have improved slightly over the past week, according to northwestmoinfo.com. The latest drought monitor map labels Clay County as experiencing “moderate drought to abnormally dry” conditions. Crops are being lost, according to local farmers Tom Ruggiere and Rebecca Graff of Fair Share Farm, who have witnessed their trees perish in the drought. According to Climatologist Dr. Pat Guinan, it was the driest May since 2012, with rankings showing the sixth driest April/May period on record for the Show-Me-State, and the driest since 1980. Missouri also had the dubious distinction of having the largest April-May precipitation deficits across the Great Plains and Midwest, exceeding six inches in central portions of the state.
