This week’s Meet your Neighbor column features Tom Martin.

Martin moved back to Excelsior from Kansas a few years ago.

He moved back here with his wife Kathy who passed away in August.

Now, he takes care of his chiweenie Little Girl whom he adopted three months ago. He said shelters rescued her in Houston from someone who used to beat her with a cane.

Shelter officials took her to Smithville, where he adopted her.

He said she recently decided to chase a raccoon. She broke her new collar to run after it and chased it up a tree, he said with a laugh.

A sports lover, he coached baseball in the summers for years. He said he coached his two boys from their childhood up until their teenage years.

He loves to go watch Tigers’ football and basketball, he said. He also plans to cheer the Tigers’ baseball on to their second year at State.

He also supports the Chiefs and the Royals.

His boys, Daron and Tommie, now grown have given him nine grandkids

He said he likes to visit with the people of Excelsior.

“I like the people here,” he said. “I just like the way it is.”
