MDC offers free seedlings in Blue Springs

Clay Countians looking for ways to landscape their yards might want to take a trip this weekend to Jackson County. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently announced it’ll give out seedlings of black walnut and redbud trees 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Burr Oak Woods Conservation Area, located near Missouri Highway 7 and East Pink Hill Road in Blue Springs. One seedling will be given per family or group, the MDC stated. The agency recommends planting the seedlings for their abilities to “provide color and food for wildlife.” “Redbuds provide lavender blossoms in spring,” an MDC news release stated. “Black walnuts provide shade when they grow tall, as well as nuts edible for people or wildlife.” The giveaways are part of an observance of Missouri Arbor Day, the MDC stated.
