Memorial Day event occurs inside, mostly

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Those who remembered fallen service members Monday in Excelsior Springs had to adapt to the weather. Originally, the annual Memorial Day ceremony was expected to take place outdoors at the six veterans monuments on the Clay Ray Veterans Association grounds. Because of rain, respects were paid inside of the Clay & Ray Veterans Hall, where American Legion Post 236 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 741 are based. There was an exception: the firing of the ceremonial three-volley salute. Led by Post 236 Commander Chris Stull, the honor guard fired rifles outside the dining hall while “Taps” played inside. Other honor guard members were Kent Cates, Jeff Donker, Dennis Heine, R.E. Holtz, Joseph Ruckman, Artie Scroggins and Ron Wetzel. Holtz, the Post 236 chaplain, served as the bugler.
