Around the nation small farms celebrated National Farmers Market Week in honor of the growth and impact of farmers markets and the role they have on America’s food supply. Excelsior Springs Chamber of Commerce’s Farmers Market Coalition recently celebrated the designation with guest speaker Mayor Mark Spohn. Spohn declared the national holiday is to be observed in Excelsior Springs Aug. 6-12 in order to celebrate farmers and what they provide for people in the area, including locally and regionally produced foods and agricultural products. “Farmers markets and other agricultural direct marketing outlets provide infrastructure to assist in the distribution of farm and value-added products,” he said. “Farmers markets contribute approximately $9 billion annually to the U.S. economy He noted in the proclamation farmer’s markets are significant outlets for small to medium producers.
