The Excelsior Springs Fire Department (ESFD) recently conducted a wetting ceremony in order to commemorate and bless their new fire truck, Pumper Two. Fire Chief Joe Maddick described the ceremony as a tradition that began during the horse-drawn era after firemen would return to the station. “Firemen would unhitch their horses, wet them down, wash and dry them, and place the horses in their stalls,” Maddick said. When pumper trucks became the primary equipment source for firemen, the tradition continued, but instead of putting horses in a stall, the entire fire crew would push the fire truck back inside the station. Maddick explained that in the modern era, those participating in the ceremony would wish the new truck good luck in order for it to provide the firemen and women, as well as the community, the best service possible for the community.
