Old drugs can, should be removed safely from homes, group says
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – While the semiannual National Drug Take-Back Day has been cancelled due to the pandemic, prevention advocates of the Excelsior Springs Substance Abuse Free Environments Coalition, or SAFE, remind the community of safe, at-home ways to dispose of unused prescription and over-the-counter medications.
“Proper disposal of medications is one important way we can all work to prevent misuse of medications, including opioids,” SAFE Director Julia Mees said.
Last year, over 500 pounds of medications went into the Excelsior Springs Police Department community disposal box in the department lobby. The dropoff box site never closes.
This year, due to the pandemic, the community is encouraged to stay home and avoid unnecessary public exposure, SAFE information states.
“So, we want to remind everyone that there are ways to properly dispose of their unused prescriptions or over-the-counter medicines at home,” Mees said. “You can mix medications with coffee grounds, kitty…
