Online sales tax moves through House Ways, Means Committee

JEFFERSON CITY – Having earlier passed the state Senate on a bipartisan vote, a bill to require out-of-state retailers to pay sales tax on online purchases passed the House Ways and Means Committee last week. Ray County Commission members this week said they hope the change will bring additional revenue to the county. The bill goes next to the House Rules Committee before being debated on the House floor. “It applies to out-of-state sellers who are selling tangible products in the state,” Chuck Pierce said. Pierce is the government relations consultant for the Missouri Society of CPAs. Multiple efforts have been made during the last decade to pass a similar measure without success. Last year, an online sales tax bill landed in the Senate, but the COVID-19 lockdown stalled further progress.
