Partnership leader reports 2020 unique for downtown

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Last year proved unlike any other for the Downtown Excelsior Partnership, and the businesses and organizations served, due to COVID-19, Executive Director Lyndsey Baxter told city leaders Feb. 16 during her annual report. “It started off like something that was going to be extremely special,” Baxter said. “And then that quickly transitioned into the shutdowns and the limitations, which made it extremely difficult for many of our downtown small businesses.” Baxter shared numbers that reflected the struggle downtown businesses faced in 2020. They reported $5.2 million in taxable retail sales income, a 10.41% drop from 2019, she said. “I was afraid that that would be much larger, so I feel that that is in tolerance of (being) OK, considering,” Baxter said. Baxter reported 24,083 stayed downtown overnight, a 19.47% drop compared to 2019. “That was probably anticipated with the shutdowns and the lost revenue, as well as weddings, specifically, from The Elms,”…
