Police nab would-be catalytic converter thieves
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – A metro area crime trend has reached Excelsior Springs, Police Chief Clint Reno told city leaders during a late-January work session.
The metro is experiencing an increase in thefts of catalytic converters from motor vehicles, Reno said.
“They were happening pretty frequently” in town, he said.
The department apprehended two people suspected of attempted catalytic converter theft at Miller’s Custom Cabinets “after a short foot chase” during a hard snowfall.
“This was the second time they’d been there,” Reno said.
Reno said the suspects have been transferred from Excelsior Springs to the Ray County Jail.
“It was nice to get a couple these players caught,” Reno said. “We know there’s still a couple other groups that are doing this.”
Reno credited Miller’s Cabinets with helping to catch the suspects via the business’ trail camera. The camera captured an image of the two suspects on company grounds that was sent to the police, he said.
