Pros, cons focus on new attempt to approve constitution

LIBERTY – Voters who decide Clay County’s future at the polls Nov. 3 may be influenced by the political campaigns conducted by opponents and supporters. One of those responsible for drafting proposed government changes, collectively called a county constitution, is a former state representive, Liberty mayor and administrative law judge, Greg Canuteson. He said the constitution group did not talk about campaigning while drafting the document. But now that the document is complete, group members plan to campaign for passage, committee member Craig Porter, Kearney, said. Porter is a former Clay County Commission member who said he knows firsthand how dysfunctional county government can be when officeholders disagree and then use their offices to get back at each other. “This is going to bring Clay County up to where it should be in the way it operates,” he said, “and the fact is that Clay County is one of the fastest-growing counties. … It’s time to upgrade from this antiquated type…
