Public aids Salvation Army after fire
RICHMOND – Having helped Ray Countians who experienced personal losses, including to house fires, the Richmond Salvation Army Store is receiving help from the public after a store fire, Director Phil Powers said June 26.
Store associate Shirley Linder said the fire burned the new building attached to the store’s rear.
“This was built just a few years back – it’s all (damaged) back there,” Linder said.
The building held mostly donated clothes.
Powers said firefighters kept the fire from spreading, but damage is considerable – possibly total. He provided a tour, starting with the basement, which contained about 8 inches of standing water from fire hoses. Contents in disarray prevented entry.
“The sump pump is what keeps it dry and normally it’s amazing,” he said. “But because of the lack of electricity, the sump pump didn’t work.”
