Residents warned of fentanyl, xylazine threat
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is warning residents about the increasing dangers of fentanyl and the growing presence of xylazine, a veterinary tranquilizer known as the “zombie drug,” which is being mixed with fentanyl in street drugs and appearing in overdose cases locally.To raise awareness, CCSO Drug Task Force Sgt. Jeremy Fahrmeier recently presented an in-depth overview at a Substance Abuse Free Environments (SAFE) meeting. The talk covered drug trafficking trends, fentanyl’s growing lethality and the disturbing rise of xylazine-related injuries and deaths.“We started seeing fentanyl in Clay County around the beginning of COVID,” said Fahrmeier. “At that time, we were working a lot of cases involving kids who were dying from this stuff and we realized we had to start educating the public.”Fahrmeier began holding community summits and school presentations to educate students and residents about drug risks.
