SAFE concerned for children exposed to cannabis

Trends and Unwanted Consequences in the Community was the theme of February’s Substance Abuse-Free Environments (SAFE) coalition meeting. Concerning data was presented by Missouri Poison Control Center’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Amanda Ruback. Ruback, a registered nurse who has been with Poison Control for 12 years, spends a lot of time combing through Poison Control’s data for Missourian communities and making connections with fluctuations according to community demographics. She says Poison Control has been partnering with state coalitions like SAFE to share data on intentional or accidental substance abuse, misuse or exposure trends. This data helps these groups to focus their efforts on specific substance issue misuses within their communities. In 2022, Poison Control received 59,000 calls for the state of Missouri, with 45 percent of those calls related to unintentional exposure in children five years and younger.
