More than 30 people gathered June 18 at the Carolyn Schutte Pocket Park in Excelsior Springs for the Parks and Recreation Department’s Movie in the Park event. The 1993 film “The Sandlot” played on an inflatable screen as a free activity for families and friends. Set in 1962 in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, the film is about a group of young baseball buddies. Nate Williams, city parks and recreation and community center director, said the department plans to stage a few more Movies in the Park events in July, along with other activities to celebrate July as Parks and Recreation Month. Movie in the Park is one of the many enrichment activities the Excelsior Springs Parks and Recreation Department is offering this summer. Others include Art in the Park, held Wednesdays through July at Siloam Mountain Park; and Storytime in the Park, held on Fridays.
