School district audit rated ‘fair’

The Excelsior Springs No. 40 School District was rated “fair” on their routine audit for year ending June 2023. Conducted by Westbrook and Co., the audit cited the district had issues, including documentation deficiencies, failure to report and purchase orders dated after purchase was made. The financial highlights for the 2023 fiscal year on the audit were as follows: • Operating fund balances for the District (General Fund and Special Revenue Fund) increased by $1,359,163, from $6,705,193 to $8,064,356. • District operating funds revenues increased by $5,489,168, from $30,955,211 to $36,444,379, the majority of which is due to improved attendance numbers and more students enrolled in summer school. • District operating funds expenditures increased by $1,853,372, from $33,231,844 to $35,085,216, the majority of which is due to personnel costs and benefit increases. • The District’s long-term debt increased by $30,748,143 from $38,801,001 to $69,549,144, where the net increase…
