School district OKs energy program

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The school district is entering a program that might reduce its carbon footprint while helping reduce the chances the area will experience rolling blackouts during extreme weather, like some parts of the country experienced this winter. The program might bring the district extra income, too. On April 12, the Board of Education agreed to participate in a free energy conservation program offered by Ameren Corp. and Enel X. The program will run from May 1 through April 30, 2026, district documents state. The district would be paid “if and when we choose to reduce consumption during peak events,” Deputy Superintendent Jaret Tomlinson stated in a memo to district leaders. “If it comes to a point where we’re in the middle of testing (and) we can’t cut back on our usage, we can say, ‘Sorry, not (able to).’ … We just don’t get paid,” Tomlinson told district leaders. “So there’s really no downside I can find to it in any way.
