Senate Bill 190 approved in Clay County
Senate Bill 190 has officially passed in Clay County with a six-to-one vote as a new ordinance allowing property tax relief for senior citizens beginning in January 2025.
Passed by the Missouri General Assembly and signed by Governor Mike Parson in August, SB 190 allows counties across the state to implement their own revised ordinance that enables a homestead property tax credit for eligible senior taxpayers.
JoAnn Lawson, Eastern Commissioner at Large, explained the bill eases the burden on seniors who can’t afford their taxes.
She explained she was overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up to support the bill and said, “We had a great discussion, and now we’re working toward getting all of the mechanics in place.”
With the new ordinance in Clay County, qualifying seniors aged 62 and older can have their property taxes frozen based on the 2023 personal property tax assessment.
