EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – There are plenty of places to sit at wellspaced tables at Muggs Diner when, for the first time in a month, patrons enter the restaurant about 9:30 a.m. Monday. “We are open,” owner Jill Williams says, eyes smiling, lips and nose covered by a mask. “This is our very first day back open.” Restaurants across Missouri closed April 6, doing only curbside and carry-out business, due to Gov. Mike Parson’s statewide shutdown order to address the COVID-19 pandemic. Muggs, 119 Crown Hill Road, Excelsior Springs, struggled while closed, Williams says. The new restaurant had just opened Jan. 10, allowing less than three months to acquire a customer base before Parson issued the order. “It was all brand new to all of us,” Williams says. “There was no test cooking, there was no run through before we opened the doors.
