A shooting at an Excelsior Springs gas station has left one person hospitalized in serious condition and one person in custody. The shooting took place Wednesday afternoon at the Quick Stop II Convenience Store at 1900 W. Jesse James Road.

According to Police Chief Clint Reno and Lt. Larry Tarrant, a 911 call came in at 3:50 p.m. reporting the shooting. Police close to the convenience store arrived quickly and found the assailant still on the scene. The male suspect was taken into custody without incident.

Witnesses shared that an argument between the two men ended with the one shooting the other in the head. EMTs transported the victim via ambulance to a KC Metro hospital.

Reno said this was not a random act and that the shooter is safely in custody. He added that there were multiple witnesses on the scene including a UPS driver whose vehicle was struck with the bullet when the shooting occurred. The convenience store has excellent video surveillance of the pumps and caught the entire incident on video, Reno shared. ESPD is in the process of obtaining the video and expect charges to be filed tomorrow.

Early investigation revealed the suspect and victim both knew each other and the incident may have stemmed over a common female acquaintance who was also on the scene at the time of the shooting.

“I’m very proud of how my department handled this incident this afternoon,” Reno said. “I can’t remember the last time we had a shooting in Excelsior Springs. It might have been 30 years ago. This is not a common thing for our town but the entire department was ready and on alert in a moment’s notice. They handled the situation quickly and efficiently. We expect this to be a very quick investigation.”
