Tom Modin, Neuroscience Outreach Specialist from Saint Luke’s Hospital, visited the Excelsior Springs Senior Center to discuss signs, symptoms and prevention for those who may be experiencing or witnessing a stroke. The onset of a stroke occurs due to a blood clot, hemorrhage, or blockage of any type in the body that immediately stops blood flow to the brain, Modin said. “As soon as we stop any blood flow to the area of the brain, it immediately becomes damaged,” he said. “About 800,000 Americans have a stroke every year, and 600,000 of those are people who have never had a stroke before.” Stokes, according to Modin, account for one out of every 19 deaths in the United States, and they are also the No. 1 cause of disability. He said the reason strokes cause someone to become disabled is because those who experience a stroke never go to the hospital when one occurs. “In 5% of all strokes, 32,000 brain cells die per second, and if you equate that all up, every hour you wait while…
