Tourism advocates voice support
Business owners, community leaders and residents voiced support for Excelsior Springs’ proposed transient guest tax during a recent public hearing, arguing the measure could help strengthen tourism, support small businessesand continue downtown investment throughout the community.The proposed 5% transient guest tax would apply to overnight lodging accommodations if approved by voters in August.Economic Development Director Keith Winge said officials believe the proposed tax could support tourism growth and economic activity throughout the city.Winge outlined several potential uses for revenue generated through the proposal, including marketing campaigns, tourism events, public art, trolley expansion and hospitality workforce training.“The proposed tax would be levied at a rate of 5% on the charges for all sleeping rooms paid by transient guests of hotels, motels, bed and breakfast establishments and short-term rentals, Airbnbs via VRB...
