‘Treasure’ hunters clean highway

ELKHORN – Some people talk about Earth Day and what can be done for the environment, but several groups of area residents worked along Missouri Highway 10 near Elkhorn Elementary School to do more than talk. With bags in hand, the groups removed trash from the side of the highway. “This is our eighth annual (pickup),” Sheryl Cox said. At the same time, the group plays a game, Cox said. “We’re part of the Geocachers,” she said. Geocaching is a type of global game that involves people looking for hidden stashes of objects. Geocachers follow clues to find the hidden containers, called geocaches. The search for geocaches teaches math, science, history and other skills. Geocaches are waterproof containers that are found by following directions.
