EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The City Council moved toward updating building codes. The council approved the initial reading of an ordinance to accept four inter national codes – electrical, gas, mechanical and plumbing. The electrical code is the 2017 version and the others are from 2018, Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy stated in a Sept. 14 memo to city leaders. Approval of the initial reading followed the council’s Sept. 7 approval of the initial reading of an ordinance to accept the International Code Council’s 2018 building codes. Like that ordinance, the ordinance to accept the four individual codes is in a 90-day waiting period before being presented to the council for a second reading. During that time, “builders will have an opportunity to come in and share with us what their concerns are with them,” Mehaffy told city leaders.
