Voters to determine funding fee for 911
On Nov. 7, voters will decide whether to impose a $1 monthly fee on any wireless device capable of calling 911 to help fund the regional system.
If the proposed wireless fee passes on Nov 7, the charge on landline phones will be eliminated.
The County Commission recently approved the ballot question that will ask voters to support the $1 monthly fee and if approved, it will appear on everyone’s phone bill in Clay County.
The fee is designed to cover the existing costs of the 911 system. It will allow the implementation of nextgeneration 911 features, including improved software, the ability for dispatch centers to accept photos and videos, and enhanced cyber security.
Since 1993, funding for 911 came from a tax placed on landline phones. Since landline phones in Clay County continue to decrease, funds have come from other sources to cover the costs.
