Woods Memorial leaves legacy for students
Woods Memorial Christian Church, a name that has been part of Excelsior Springs history for 100-plus years, closed its doors earlier this year, but its legacy will continue.
Church members Joyce McKown and her son Darren donated $125,000 to the Excelsior Springs Educational Foundation on Tuesday to help the children of the community for years to come.
Of that amount, $25,000 will be donated to the foundation’s Tiger in Need program, an initiative geared to help feed students who cannot otherwise afford a school meal. The other $100,000 will go into an endowment that will help fund scholarships to graduating seniors every year.
“We want the children to be blessed by our donation, so that we can continue to be part of the community,” Joyce McKown said. “We have given to a lot of organizations over the years. This way, we can continue to be a part of everything. We’re just trying to bless everyone.”
