Zegers, Kilgore join The Standard’s news team

November 24, 2017 – The Excelsior Springs Standard announces Brittany Zegers and Samantha Kilgore as the newspaper’s new full-time news crew.

Zegers has a bachelor of science degree in journalism with minors in interactive digital media and visual journalism from Northwest Missouri State University. She attended NWMSU with an Eckert Collegiate Journalism Scholarship.

During college, Zegers was awarded third place in the Best of Collegiate Design for online publications as Editor-in-Chief for Heartland View online magazine.

“Brittany has been with us for almost two months and already I’m seeing her influence in the newspaper’s design and quality,” said Standard Publisher Brian Rice. “Community newspapers are making that evolution to digital formats and I’m confident Brittany’s skills and experience will lead the way for The Standard. I’m proud of Brittany’s work and very excited to see what changes lie ahead for us.”

In addition to the newspaper’s design and digital presence internally, Zegers will also be covering police, fire and sheriff reports, plus all community calendar activities and events. Zegers will also deliver community human interest stories on occasion.

Zegers joined The Standard staff on Monday, Sept. 11.

Kilgore has a bachelor of arts degree in creative writing with a minor in history from Washburn University. Over the past four years, Kilgore has been a writer for an online media company. When she is not writing, which is seldom, Kilgore is reading or serving as secretary on the PALS parent group at Lewis Elementary School.

“Samantha has been a contributing writer for the newspaper for several months. When the opening came, moving Samantha to a full-time position was an easy decision,” Rice said. “Samantha’s ability to connect with the people she’s interviewing, her inquisitive nature and her quick turnaround of news articles will make her a very valuable asset to the newspaper as our community reporter. I know Samantha will continue our newspaper’s tradition of connecting with the community and sharing the stories it tells.”

Kilgore’s beat will include Excelsior Springs School Board, school news and all community news coverage. She will produce feature articles for the newspaper on a regular basis.

Kilgore lives in Excelsior Springs with her husband, Justin, and her two children, Justin, 8, and Maggie, 6 months. The family transplanted from Smithville four years ago when they “discovered” Excelsior Springs and fell in love with the community and its school district.

Kilgore’s joined the staff on Monday, Nov. 20.
