From Aug. 2 to 4, the “Galz of 55” got a look at Excelsior Springs for one last time. Janet Van Diver, Dianne Harlow, Jan Stump, Jan Stocks and Judy Miller are among the original group members, who’ve traveled together every year since 1997. Their first Excelsior Springs trip was in 1999, with 17 Galz attending. Their latest trip to Excelsior Springs, made with some family members, also is their last-ever trip together. When asked what had prompted their first trip to Excelsior Springs, Harlow replied: “I read an article in the paper. We were probably taking an Ozark daily paper, Lake Sun News. I think they ran a special about Excelsior Springs. They (The Elms Hotel and Spa) were renovating 22 years ago, and I think the prices were lower.” That first trip included a musical interlude, Harlow recalled. “We stood around a grand piano and sang to a lady (pianist) that was a guest there and she played by ear – any song we knew. She thought we were a Sweet Adeline chorus,” she said. …
