Paul Joseph Shaffer was born Nov. 16, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, to Eugene and Eva Maesch Shaffer. He had two brothers and three sisters. He has one surviving sister, Mary Cheek of Nashville IN.

Paul, “Pops”, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sept. 25, 2021. He leaves behind his wife, Ruth Shaffer, of the home; four daughters, Debbie Hilliker and Tammy Sweezey of Jackson, Michigan, Jodie Shaffer-Loveall of Excelsior Springs, MO, and Jessica (Josh) Butler of Lawson, MO; and several grandchildren, Christian Shaffer, Paige Loveall, Bodie Loveall, Brayden Butler, Darian Butler, and Danielle Hilliker.

He is in heaven with his oldest grandson, Shawn William Shaffer. He also leaves behind four great-grandchildren, Donovan Storm Pate, Donelle, Damon and Roe.

Paul graduated from Glenn High School, Terre Haute, IN, in 1958. Upon graduation he joined the Army. After basic training he attended jump school at Fort Bragg, South Carolina.  He later completed Green Beret training at Fort Benning, Ga. He served his country in the Army for nine years.

He met his soul mate, Ruth Payne, in 1967 in Kansas City. They were married a year later and remained married for 53 years. Paul attended Penn Valley College in Kansas City, MO for two years. He worked many years as a truck driver dispatcher. After that he operated a shuttle service with his daughter, Jessica, until his retirement. Paul was an umpire and coach for youth sports for twenty years. He influenced many kids. Paul was a God-fearing man and attended Pisgah Baptist Church for most of fifty years. Paul was loved by everyone he encountered even if he didn’t always agree with them. Paul will be greatly missed by his friends and family.

There will be a celebration of life at Pisgah Baptist church, Oct. 1, 2021. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with the memorial service to follow at 11 a.m.  A family dinner will follow in the gymnasium.
