Christmas poetry wakes spirits of joy

When we think about Christmas traditions, especially those of us with small children, the framework revolves around music, food and generalized festivities, including seeing Santa Claus or driving around to witness the neighbors’ decorations in the evening shadows. As a writer, winter, in general, entices me to write. Being stuck inside on cold winter nights or basking in the light of a dimly lit Christmas tree inspires the spirit of the holiday season. But what does writing have to do with the holiday anyway? Stammering through poetry finals while being ill and recovering from surgery, I decided to look into the meaning behind poetry and how it evokes the Yuletide greetings and warm sensations of the winter blues and spirited joys of Christmas. Sure, holiday music embodies the form of lyrical poetry for our entertainment. Yes, it keeps us company (or sometimes sane!) while wrapping gifts and making the millionth cookie with our children.
