Should voter education be required?

When election time comes around, one word always comes to my mind, education. Most decisions we make in life require some sort of prior knowledge for us to feel confident in the choices we are making. Yet, when it comes to electing our leaders, there is no requirement for you to be informed before you vote. Many go to the polls and select candidates based on party affiliation, random selection or leaving spots blank. To get a learner’s permit to drive, you must prove you know the rules by passing a test. Why do we not have to prove we understand the concept of elections before casting a vote? At the minimum, we should understand the basics of elections before we make choices that affect the lives of everyone around us. I don’t mean we should go back to literacy tests, but I do feel passing a simple test acknowledging the basics should be required. It’s ironic because I am guilty of not knowing every single person I have voted for and what they believe in or support. I am wrong…
