Chappel moves up the leaderboard in return to state

NEW BLOOMFIELD – Often, when a high school athlete returns to a state tournament, the goal is to place better than the previous year. Such was the case for Excelsior Springs senior Hope Chappel. And Chappel accomplished her goal. Chappel tied for 31st at the Class 2 state girls golf tournament, held Monday and Tuesday at the Meadow Lakes Acres Country Club. In 2019, she placed in a five-way tie for 43rd at the Class 1 tournament. The challenge that awaited Chappel was playing a par-72 course against 75 of the top Class 2 girls golfers. She addressed that challenge by shooting a 48 on the front nine Monday. Chappel made par on the sixth and eighth holes; bogeyed on Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 7; scored double-bogeys on Nos. 5 and 9; and had a quadruple-bogey on No. 3. For the back nine, Chappel shot a 45 to finish with a 93 (+21). She collected pars on Nos. 3 and 8, along with bogeys on Nos. 1, 7 and 9; and double-bogeys on Nos. 2, 5 and 6.
