Chiefs begin preparations for threepeat run
With the regular season less than three weeks away, Kansas City is prepping to do something only one other NFL franchise has done: win three straight league titles.
The Chiefs have won back-to-back league titles, rallying to defeat Philadelphia in Super Bowl LVII, and then rallying and defeating San Francisco in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII. A victory in Super Bowl LIX, scheduled for February 2025 in New Orleans would put them in the company of Green Bay.
Green Bay won three straight league titles in two eras. First, the Packers were champions 1929-31, based on season winning percentages. As the Pro Football Hall of Fame website states, the NFL didn’t begin determining league champions with postseason playoffs until 1932.
The Packers pulled off their next threepeat 1965-67. After winning the 1966 title, they defeated Kansas City in January 1967 in what was then called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game, now known as Super Bowl I. The Chiefs, who joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the NFL-AFL merger, won the 1966 AFL title by routing Buffalo.
Green Bay capped its run by winning the 1967 NFL title in December. The Packers then defeated the then-Oakland Raiders (now Las Vegas Raiders) in Super Bowl II in January 1968.
According to the website Sharp Football Analysis, the Chiefs will pursue their threepeat by playing the NFL’s 12th toughest schedule. That schedule begins Sept. 5 with Baltimore at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium – one of six nationally televised prime-time, regular-season games.
The season opener also is a rematch of the AFC title game. Kansas City defeated Baltimore 17-10 in January at M&T Bank Stadium for the conference title to advance to Super Bowl LVIII.
Head coach Andy Reid will lead the Chiefs on their quest. Now in his 12th season with Kansas City, Reid has coached the Chiefs to eight straight AFC West Division titles, four AFC titles and three Super Bowl titles in five seasons.
Offensively, Reid will again collaborate with All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes II. Mahomes was sixth in the league last season in passing yards with 4,183 and eighth in TD passes with 27.
Other offensive weapons will include running back Isaiah Pacheco and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. Pacheco, who’s in his third season with the Chiefs, rushed for 935 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023. Kelce, who has drawn media attention for his relationship with pop music star Taylor Swift, caught 93 passes for 984 yards and five touchdowns last season.
Chris Jones and George Karlaftis will help lead the defense. Jones and Karlaftis each had 10.5 sacks last season.
