Coaches, parents should work together to help young athletes

In sports, there are two types of parents. Some parents want their kids to just have fun. Others are super-intense and expect greatness from their kids every time they play. For coaches and athletes, there are several approaches to dealing with parents, particularly the second type. One is for coaches to tell the parents to sit back and enjoy the opportunities to watch their children play sports. Another approach – and it’s a sound approach – is to encourage parents to give their athletes support during and after games. Unfortunately, many kids dread the ride home from an event because they fear their parents will burden them with negative comments. Often, those comments turn children away from playing sports. In addition, most athletes know when they’ve made a mistake and most likely don’t need to be reminded of what happened in a negative manner.
