ES boys get Senior Night win, then fall to St. Joseph Central
Excelsior Springs opted to observe Senior Night for its boys basketball players a little early.
The Tigers honored their seniors Jan. 18, when they hosted Kansas City East. The seniors and their younger teammates responded with a 47-41 win.
Excelsior Springs jumped out to a 6-0 lead on back-to-back three-pointers by seniors Ziha Hyche and Theo Sturhman. The Tigers went on to lead 12-7 after one quarter.
The Bears outscored the Tigers 13-12 the second quarter.
The teams traded baskets early in the third quarter. East took a 30-28 lead with 1 minute, 50 seconds left in the quarter before the Tigers outscored the Bears 6-2 down the stretch to lead 34-32 entering the fourth quarter. Excelsior Springs’ scoring stretch included a trey by sophomore Marquez McCant with a minute and change left.
Sparked by a steady press break and offense, the Tigers outscored the Bears 13-9 the final quarter to secure the win.
