ES boys tumble to end regular season, postseason

Excelsior Springs’ latest varsity boys basketball season ended Tuesday. That night, the Tigers fell to Odessa at Oak Grove in the first round of Class 4 District 15 Tournament play. They finished the season 2-22. Look for additional game coverage next week. END OF THE REGULAR SEASON Excelsior Springs carried a 13-game losing skid into districts, including double-digit losses Feb. 20 at Smithville and Feb. 21 to visiting Oak Grove. The Tigers had to play catchup in their 80-42 road loss to Smithville – the Warriors’ 13th victory of the season. The Warriors scored the first five points and then staged a 16-6 first-quarter run. Smithville led 21-8 at quarter’s end. Sparked by a 7-0 run, Smithville outscored Excelsior Springs 25-6 the second quarter to lead 46-14 at halftime. The Warriors edged the Tigers 21-17 the third quarter. They then finished the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division meeting with a 13-11 fourth quarter.
