Excelsior Springs’ latest homestand in varsity boys soccer ended with a split. The Tigers went 1-1, falling to Kearney 5-2 Sept. 18 in Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division play, then cruising past Benton of St. Joseph 6-0 Sept. 21. Kearney took the opening lead on a penalty kick in the fifth minute. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 in the 18th minute and 3-0 in the 43rd. Senior Mason Wartner’s penalty kick put the Tigers on the board in the 47th minute, but the Bulldogs made it a threegoal game again in the 49th. The Bulldogs finished their scoring in the 53rd minute. Wartner scored Excelsior Springs’ final goal in the 63rd minute. Against Benton, Wartner continued his scoring streak, giving the Tigers the opening lead in the fifth minute off an assist from junior Grayson Grove. Junior Austin Collins made it 2-0 in the 13th minute off an assist from junior Kolin Kincaid. Collins added another goal in the 23rd minute by finishing an assist pass by Wartner. Jake Zapata…
