ES softballers fall to Pirates in districts

SMITHVILLE – Districts are a part of the high school sports season when some teams move on and others go home. In softball, Excelsior Springs moved on for one game of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament. Then, the Tigers went home The Tigers entered districts having won three out of their last five ballgames. Seeded fifth, the Tigers opened Oct. 13 at Smithville against fourth-seeded St. Joseph Lafayette, winning 4-0. Senior Emilee Barrera scored from third on a passed ball to give the Tigers a 1-0 first-inning lead. Excelsior Springs then put up a three-spot in the sixth inning, as junior Aracely Lopez swatted a two-run triple to right field and later scored on an error for the final run. Senior pitcher Mayce Barber kept the Irish off the scoreboard, backed up by a defense that committed only one error. Barber struck out 10 and walked one in going the distance.
