Excelsior Springs boys take third in state soccer

FENTON – The Tigers’ Nov. 19-20 visit to the World Wide Technology Soccer Park did not end in Excelsior Springs’ first state boys soccer title. But it ended in a third-place finish. Excelsior Springs dropped its Class 2 semifinal with Perryville 4-3 Nov. 19, then rebounded the next day by defeating Harrisonville 3-1 in the third-place game. The finish was Excelsior Springs’ best since 2004, when the Tigers were runnersup to St. Dominic of O’Fallon. The semifinal was a tale of two halves. The Tigers led 3-0 at halftime. Senior Ethan Edwards scored the first goal in the sixth minute, with junior Brendan Blackburn assisting him on a corner kick rebound. Freshman Kollin Kincaid made it 2-0 in the 17th minute, when he received the ball from freshman Jacob Zapata in the middle of the field and split two Perryville defenders.
