Ganzer leads mix of maturity, youth onto soccer pitch

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Tigers possess a mix of maturity and inexperience as they prepare to take the field this varsity boys soccer season. Senior defender Matthew Smith is part of the experienced group, as he returns from a first-team all-district, second-team all-conference season in 2019. Joining him is senior Rudi DeLeon, who returns after taking off last season to run cross country. Coach Zac Ganzer is looking to other seniors to help lead Excelsior Springs onto the field. They are Blake Rhine, Kyle Barrett, James Love and first-year player Ben Starkebaum. Junior defender Ethan Edwards also is returning to help the Tigers, who were 14-7 overall and 7-3 in the Missouri River Valley Conference in 2019. As a sophomore, Edwards earned first-team all-conference and academic all-conference honors.
