Girls grapplers win three matches against state-ranked foe
On Jan. 11, the Excelsior Springs girls got to test themselves.
That night, the Tigers faced Kearney – the top-ranked team in the state in Class 1. They handled the test well enough to win three on-the-mat matches in their 54-27 road loss.
Jaylenn Hudlemeyer, Lauren Park and sophomore Adrien Crawley got the wins for Excelsior Springs. Hudlemeyer, a senior, won a 5-2 decision over Ella Herndon at 125 pounds to improve to 16-10 this season.
Park, a junior, pinned Jaycee Preece at 140 to improve to 11-11. Crawley, a sophomore, pinned Aida Appenfeller at 190 to improve to 17-9.
In other Excelsior Springs results, junior Kaitlynn Foster lost by pin to Riley Walker at 115. Sophomore Lillah Shue dropped her 120 match to Isabelle Cornejo. Pyper Layton, a first-year high schooler, lost her 130 match by fall to Savannah McDowell.
Sophomore Lilly Wilson lost by at 155 to Emma Schaetz. Reaghan Lawrence, a first-year high schooler, dropped her 170 match to Carli Vargas.
