Girls hoopsters take fourth at Richmond tourney
Excelsior Springs has played its last tournament in varsity girls basketball – for the 2023-24 regular season, that is.
The girls finished the tournament portion of their regular-season schedule last week with three games at the Richmond Winter Classic, going 1-2. After opening Jan. 22 with a 40-30 victory over Wellington-Napoleon in a tussle of schools nicknamed the Tigers, they fell to Bishop LeBlond of St. Joseph 36-11 Jan. 25 and Cameron 40-22 Jan. 26, finishing fourth.
Excelsior Springs was knotted at 12 after one quarter of its first-round win over Wellington-Napoleon at Richmond Middle School. The Excelsior Springs girls took control by outscoring Wellington-Napoleon 6-1 the second quarter.
Excelsior Springs then outscored Wellington-Napoleon 13-7 the third quarter. Wellington-Napoleon edged Excelsior Springs 10-9 the fourth quarter.
Kinley Rogers led Excelsior Springs with 10 points. The sophomore also grabbed 12 rebounds for a doubledouble.
